USME interviewed both recipients on their experience working for USME and how things have evolved over the last ten years.

Rabin Shrestha, Director of Purchasing | Houston Support Center

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

Maintaining an optimal level of equipment and helping the sales team meet our partners equipment needs.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Being able to work with a great group of people in leadership and my department. There has rapid growth over the last ten years, but the core value of the company has stayed the same. Helping a patient in need and doing everything we can to help our partners take care of their patients. We are continuously faced with difficult situations but being able to work together as a team to overcome any challenge gives me the most satisfaction.

Tell us about some changes you have seen over the past 10 years while working at USME.

There has been tremendous growth at US Med-Equip during the past ten years. Everything from our service area, customer base, equipment inventory and employee force has increased. We have also seen a lot of consolidation among our partner hospitals as well as equipment manufacturers. Our ability to secure strategic partnerships with our hospital partners and equipment manufacturers along with the ability to invest in our growth has kept us relevant during the ups and downs over the years.

What are some of your biggest contributions or impact that you have had working at USME in your role(s)?

During my tenure at USME I have been working mostly in the Purchasing department. I did spend a short period focusing on sales only, but I have always been deeply involved with the sales team and helping them meet their objectives. Over the years I was able to build great partnerships with several vendors, secure distributorship contracts and engage in revenue share agreements. I am fortunate to have a great team who work with me in Purchasing and Inside Sales.

What do you enjoy most about working at USME?

Everyday there is a new challenge at USME and that’s what I enjoy the most.

Robert Melancon, Director of Field Operations | Nashville Branch

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

I love that we are all patient-focused at USME – so the toughest part in any role with the company has always been telling a customer we can’t serve their needs for whatever reason. Whether it’s a need for a CPM or a 3100, there’s always a patient that is potentially suffering in some way as the reason for that call, and we all want to take care of them.

As we grow larger, we have so much talent at every level of the organization, the latest challenge is finding new personnel to add to our team that can fit in with such a great crew – good talent is hard to find and I feel like we have all of it here at USME.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Just as the most challenging aspect, the most rewarding aspects of my job are being involved with our partners getting taken care of and helping our operations crew learn and grow and advance their skills and careers. There are no two better feelings at work than when you get to experience the relief we bring to a hospital staff because we provided them with a solution to a critical patient that will save their life as well as when you get to watch someone win an award or get a shoutout for doing a fantastic job.

Tell us about some changes you have seen over the past 10 years while working at USME.

Well, I don’t have to load a 7200 ventilator (120 pounds!) into mini vans without a liftgate anymore.

As far as the industry goes, technology is getting smarter and smarter. When I started, we rarely had to worry about software and wireless capabilities for anything. Our ops team these days have a lot on their plates compared to when I started in order to get an order right the first time. Our team in the field are worlds ahead of where I needed to be early on because of how fast they have to learn to take care of our partners.

What are some of your biggest contributions or impact that you have had working at USME in your role(s)?

If I had to hope for a reputation at USME, I hope that everyone knows if you call, I’ll answer – I’m here to help in any way I can.

What do you enjoy most about working at USME?

Hands down our people and culture. Everyone here “gets it” – as in we understand there is a patient in need. I truly feel every decision we make at all levels, there is the intention of serving a patient, and that’s a great thing. From our compassionate Dispatch team, our BDR’s beating down doors, our ops team putting in thousands of miles on the road each week to take care of partners, Equipment Management orchestrating movement for the entire country, and everyone in between – we all do it for the same central cause – our partners and patients.  It never feels like "work" at USME – so I’d like to thank everyone for making us who we are.
